Woodworking From Plans

I love working with wood and when working with wood I have I always preferred working from plans. I advise that you always work from plans, either by making your own plans or by purchasing premade plans.

I now predominantly design my own plans but when I first started I found it easier to purchase woodworking plans. Depending on the woodworker that you are you will either purchase plans or make your own, either way, I have a few tips that will help with your woodworking plans. My tips are listed below:

• Make sure you have the correct tools. If you don’t have the necessary tools then it is no good starting a job as you won’t be able to finish the project. There are many woodworking projects that require specific tools for a job that you may not already have.

• Ask the question: Does this fit? I once built a fantastic dining room table but I could not get it into my home. In my haste I measured the table to ensure it could get out of the workshop but I forgot to measure whether it could get into the house. Learn from the mistake that I made and make sure you always ensure that the project can actually make it to where it needs to go.

• Measure twice. When coming up with your own woodworking plans make sure that all the measurements add up and the project will fit together. Your whole project could be ruined by a minor mistake in measurement.

• Skill. The right skill level is important before you start any woodworking project. It is important to start with smaller, easier projects and work your way to larger, more difficult projects. If you do decided to proceed by starting with a tougher project then you can practice using scrap wood as you go.

• Time. When working on your woodworking project I recommend that you take your time and work through each stage in your own time. There is no point in rushing through a project and getting it wrong and having to start all over again.
